From the year 2026
Avon Valley - the Bures Band, a single from their album Ozonia, which showed up in August. Avon Valley is a national park in Western Australia, which is where the Bures Band is from. There are a few ways to pronounce the band's name - here's one: Bures rhymes with fewers.
Sky And Hill - the Church, another single from from their new album Lacuna, an October arrival.
Going To A Show - the Cat's Miaow, from their album When You Smiled And Turned Away, another October release. The band has been making music together since 1992, releasing several independent cassettes and singles, but this is their first full-length studio album.
Technically recent
Somebody's Fool - Hana and Jessie Lee's Bad Habits, from a split EP released in October along with Mick Thomas's Roving Commission, combining studio and live recordings.
Don't Fall Down The Rabbit Hole - Things of Stone And Wood, from their album Rae Street, which came out in March.
Nobody's An Angel - Lisa Miller, from her 1996 debut album Quiet Girl With A Credit Card, which in October received the vinyl reissue treatment to mark 30 years since its release.
Memories - the Blackeyed Susans, from their 1993 album All Souls Alive, another favorite that's out in vinyl for the first time.
Into the vault
This week we're searching for Aussies covering Chuck Berry.
- Johnny B. Goode - as interpreted by the Masters Apprentices in 1967, from their self-titled debut album. Mr Berry released it as a single in 1958.
- Rock And Roll Music - Mental As Anything, their version is on a 1988 single and their 1989 album Cyclone Raymond. It was a 1957 single for Chuck.
- School Days - AC/DC, it's on their second studio album, TNT, released only in Australia and New Zealand in 1975, repackaged for the rest of the world in 1976 as High Voltage, without School Days. Chuck Berry did it in 1957.
And then...
Who Needs Who Now - the Crystal Set, the B-side of a 1987 single. The A-side was the title track of their debut album. The lead singer and bass player in the band was Russell Kilbey, whose big brother Steve Kilbey produced the album. Steve Kilbey is better known as lead singer and bass player in the Chruch.
Ambergris - Died Pretty, from their 1985 EP Next To Nothing.
Love Is A Sign - the Go-Betweens from their album 16 Lovers Lane, a 1988 release.
