I was not happy to be away from my microphone right when the possible two best releases of the year occurred from smooth jazz icons pianist David Benoit and trumpeter Rick Braun. Before I left, I played double releases from these two albums which I will do again this week to make up for those lost weeks.
David Benoit’s new album released in August is titled David Benoit And Friends. Among the incredible array of talent of those friends playing on this album are Dave Koz, Peter White, Rick Braun, Lindsey Webster, Marc Antoine, Vincent Ingala, and Tim Weissberg.
Fantastic trumpeter Rick Braun’s new album also released in August is titled Crossroads. I deeply admire his work as reflected in me choosing his song Another Kind Of Blue to open all my programs. The second song played from Rick Braun’s new album is one of his wife’s favorite songs. Listen for Braun’s son Kyle playing a piano intro. Although musically very talented Kyle is not looking to be a professional musician. He is more interested in basketball.
Another fantastic new release is from San Francisco guitarist Joyce Cooling. After huge success and an almost cult following her debut album Playing It Cool and her radio single South Of Market, Cooling released several more successful albums. Then she inexplicably stopped releasing new music. Her new album Living Out Loud released on September 13th is her first release in ten years.
Movie and television actor Jeff Goldblum is an excellent jazz pianist. When not acting Goldblum can be found every Wednesday night in Los Angeles performing at an intimate jazz lounge, the Rockwell Table & Stage with the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. This is a wonderful setting where Goldblum supplies his witty humor around the music and interacts with the audience between sets. Goldblum’s released an album of live performances titled The Capital Studios Sessions - Jeff Goldblum and the Mildred Snitzer Orchestra last fall that quickly reached number one on Billboard’s jazz albums both in the United States and the U.K. Now at the recent Glastonbury Festival in the U.K., Goldblum announced from the stage that his next new album was in the works. It will feature an impressive array of surprising duet guests. Scheduled for release November 1st it will be titled I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This. I will play an early release that showcases his piano with a vocal from Sharon Van Etten performing the Irving Berlin song Let’s Face The Music And Dance.
In the middle of the first hour, I will play the Billboard top three songs in smooth jazz.
The second hour is devoted to smooth jazz classics and will finish with a double listen from pianist, keyboardist, composer, and founding member of The Crusaders Joe Sample. Our classic among classics segment is from his very touching, never to be forgotten 1989 album Spellbound. Listen to his very distinctive piano that can not be mistaken for any other. I have a double listen for you. First is the title track and we will finish up on a very soft note with his time-honored song Looking Glass.
