For this show I have a very special classics among classics segment, earlier than usual since it will take a bit more time than normal. While before smooth jazz was a format, the type of music I am about to play is what we are about on this program, easy listening jazz inspired music with proper rhythms. The artist Antonio Carlos Jobim was very influential on future artists. He was a composer, pianist, guitarist, flute player, singer, and arranger from Brazil.  He brought international recognition to the music style bossa nova, helping merge it with jazz in the 1960’s to create a new sound that exploded in popularity.

Now I must admit that although we all know the song The Girl From Ipanema, my knowledge of Jobim was sketchy. That all changed during our April interview with Sarah McKenzie. She spoke of her great experience playing with the remaining members of Jobim’s band in Brazil that  inspired a couple of songs on her latest album.

We will hear three of Jobim's greatest songs before proceeding to Jobim’s biggest song that became a worldwide hit, The Girl From Ipanema.  It is believed to be the second most recorded pop song in history behind only Yesterday by the Beatles. Jazz great Stan Getz led off his album Getz/Gilberto with this song. In 1965 it became the first jazz album to win the Grammy for album of the year. It also won Grammys for Best Jazz Instrumental album and Best Engineered Album. On top of that The Girl From Ipanema won for the prestigious Record Of The Year. I will play that record setting song written by Jobim.

The Girl From Ipanema has been recorded over 240 times by other artists. The most famous of these is in the 1967 Frank Sinatra release of an album with Jobim. It was titled Francis Albert Sinatra And Antonio Carlos Jobim and was nominated for album of the year in 1968.  I will play their very memorable duet of The Girl From Ipanema. Preceding the song is a brief, cool introduction of Jobim by Frank.

In the first hour, I have new releases this week from Cindy Bradley, Pieces Of A Dream, Craig Sharmat, Elan Trotman, Walter Beasley, Johnny Britt, J White, Reza Kahn, and Gabriel Mark Hasselback.

I will play Billboard's top three song in smooth jazz for this week in the middle of the first hour.

The second hour is devoted to classics in smooth jazz. The classics among classic segment on Antonio Carlos Jobim above will be in the second hour after our five in a row segment.

Thank you for your continuing support of this program and KKRN.
